“Audiences Hate Modern Classical Music Because Their Brains Cannot Cope” was a headline in the Daily Telegraph two years ago. The article, one of a spate of recent pieces touting alleged discoveries in music cognition (Katy Waldman has a skeptical rundown of the genre at Slate), noted a study reporting “an overwhelming feeling of confusion” in human brains exposed to the atonal works of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. Heck, at least they got their names in the paper.
